You have sacrificed your health and given your time to protect our country and our families. You fought for our freedom. Now it is our turn to serve you.
Due to the stressful nature of a military career, our military personnel are at higher risk of developing mental health problems. As a Veteran, Dr. Elizeth Chavez understands the unique and traumatic experiences of many military service members. She served in the Army as a Captain in the Behavioral Health Service Line and witnessed the silent battle many veterans and military personnel endure with depression, suicide thoughts, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, sleep problems, chronic pain, substance abuse, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI).
Many of our Veterans find themselves dealing with the stress and adjustment challenges associated with separation or retirement from their military career. Adequate mental health care is crucial for facilitating our veterans’ reintegration into civilian life and improving their wellbeing.
Veterans and Military personnel face several barriers to care including limited access to essential specialized mental health services on military bases and VA centers due to limited available mental health services or inconsistent access. Stigma and negative stereotypes surrounding mental health problems and help-seeking behavior often leave military personnel feeling pressured to hide their mental health challenges due to the military’s culture of stoicism and toughness.
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. We know you are strong, fearless, and resilient. You do not need to “suck it up” and endure this suffering and pain alone without any support. The military’s culture of “embracing the suck” when dealing with pain and not complaining is essential in combat or critical missions, but it does not need to extend to your overall well-being.
It is our mission to guide you and help heal the wounds of your trauma and other military experiences so that you can transform your life.
Military families often experience a variety of mental health challenges. Deployments can be especially stressful for families, especially for children. These mental health challenges are compounded by constant change, frequent relocation, and heightened marital and family conflict. As a parent of a military child, Dr. Chavez is familiar with the military family syndrome and understands how children suffer from social and academic problems, separation anxiety, depression, and worry while their military parent is away on deployment or military training, and continuing after the parent returns home.
It is essential to have a mental health professional who is well-versed in military culture who can understand and treat the specific forms of trauma and mental health problems military members and their families face.
